Abstract

Problem. Enterprise transformations fail at a remarkably stable rate, and the failure is structural. Organizational knowledge is fragmented into vertical silos (strategy, process, system, data) and horizontal governance domains (data, security, AI, compliance), so the organization cannot reliably query what it already knows. Talented people and good technology do not fix it, because the fault is not in the people but in how their knowledge is held.

Rationale. AI agents need coherent, machine-readable context to act well. Bolted onto a fragmented organization they inherit the fragmentation and multiply it, so coherence stops being an academic virtue and becomes an operational necessity. AI is the forcing function that finally makes systems thinking pay.

Approach. The paper synthesizes several systems traditions into one design requirement – a high-variety, queryable, reflexively governed self-description of the organization – and proposes an operational form for it: the Spec-Driven Organization (SDO), a queryable World Model held as a typed spec graph over a unified data substrate and governed by an Orchestration Governance function (Beer's System 4–5 metasystem made explicit). The World Model is built not as a master schema but as a holon – a whole-that-is-also-a-part – following holonic-graph architecture.

Contribution. The resulting paradigm, Corporate Consilience, is a mid-range design theory: it explains why organizations fragment and proposes how to re-couple representation and action, with its integrity resting on a reflexive discipline we name productive doublethink. The work is conceptual and design-theoretical, grounded in transformation practice – including an archetypal "synthetic company" distilled from public domain knowledge – and it states falsifiable propositions for future testing.
