But the world is facing a number of crises, and systems do not change smoothly – they pass through phases of decline and reorganization that might be quite troubling. Success may depend, as Andy Stirling said the first day of this conference, on our ability to be responsive to the opportunity inherent in crisis; that is, to see the systemic nature of our circumstances and alternative pathways that make up a complex roadmap with more than one road, as Andy also said. One thing we can do in a crisis, is to always ask “what can we learn from this.” That’s “Crisis Science”, and its lessons can tell us how to do “Sustainability Science”.
